History of Indivisible SM

Who We Are

Indivisible Santa Maria was founded in late March 2025, and our first major protest, “Hands Off,” took place on April 5th with about 150 participants!  We grew to around 1800 at No Kings 2, and we currently have over 1100 people on our E-Blast list!

When we started, we had no budget, most of us had no experience in activism, no place to meet, and we were all volunteers. Indivisible was created by everyday people who yearned for local action against the tyranny of this administration. After numerous conversations and meetings, we laid the groundwork for a strong, lasting resistance movement.

Over the past year, we have led 7 large protests and 9 pop-up protests, tabled at multiple community events, and created a Bridge Banner Brigade that regularly shows up to display political banners on our highway overpasses.

From the start, we have been committed to non-violence as a guiding principle in everything we do: our protests, our organizing, and our advocacy.

The National Movement

Indivisible was founded in 2016 by four congressional staffers who were worried that American democracy was rigged from the start in favor of the white and the wealthy, and that white nationalists and the ultra-rich were actively working to undermine our government to secure their grip on power. The movement began with the online publication of a handbook offering suggestions for peacefully but effectively resisting the rightward shift under the Trump administration, which was widely anticipated and feared by progressives.

That concern still exists. Together, Indivisible Santa Maria joins with 2700 chapters around the country whose deep-rooted conviction is that organized people can beat organized hate, and that our power comes, not just from our numbers, but from how we show up. Strong, hopeful, peaceful, and enthusiastic. From the start, we have been committed to non-violence as a guiding principle in everything we do: our protests, our organizing, and our advocacy.

Rally Chants

At the January General Meeting, the group created several chants for our rallies.

Hey Trump, Hey Vance

Give Demo-cracy a chance!

Now’s the time for us to say!

Democracy’s the only way!

Hey, Hey, Ho,Ho

Trumpty, Dumpty’s

Gotta go!

Stand up (two claps)

And Shout (two claps)

We need to vote (one clap)

Maga Out (one clap)

Stop the Hate

Stop the Lies

How many have to die?

Stand Up!

Speak Out!

This is what we are about!

Felons, felons go to jail!

Donald Trump cannot get bail!

No pardon, no bail!

Donald Trump must go to jail!

Big G little o

Go ICE go!

Immigrant Rights

Not more ICE!

No murder, no ICE!

WE don’t want to say it twice!
